Chapter 4 of 5
Your First Flight

Your First Flight

Step-by-step guidance for conducting your first safe UAS flight.

Choosing Your Flight Location

Ideal location characteristics:

  • Open area with no overhead obstacles
  • Flat, clear ground away from people and buildings
  • No nearby airports or restricted airspace
  • Good visibility and lighting
  • Minimal wind (under 15 mph for beginners)

Always check airspace using B4UFLY app before traveling to location.

Pre-Flight Procedures

Day Before At Location
• Charge all batteries
• Check weather forecast
• Verify airspace clear
• Inspect aircraft
• Verify wind acceptable
• Check propellers secure
• Battery installed properly
• Test controller

Basic Flight Maneuvers

Takeoff Sequence

  1. Power on controller first, then aircraft
  2. Wait for GPS lock (30-60 seconds)
  3. Slowly increase throttle for smooth takeoff
  4. Hover at 3-5 feet to verify stability

Never rush takeoff. Verify all systems before climbing.

Master the Hover

Most important skill - practice 5-10 minutes before advancing:

  • Stable hover at 5-10 feet
  • Hold position without drift
  • Small corrections only
  • Smooth control inputs

Progressive Maneuvers (in order)

  1. Forward/Backward - Maintain altitude while moving
  2. Lateral (Left/Right) - Maintain heading while moving sideways
  3. Yaw (Rotation) - Slow 90° rotations, then 360°
  4. Combined - Smooth transitions between maneuvers

Emergency Procedures

Situation Response
Lost Orientation Stop inputs → Allow hover → Observe → Regain control
Low Battery Stop maneuver → Hover → Land immediately
GPS Loss Maintain calm → Smooth inputs → Land ASAP

Landing

Controlled procedure:

  1. Position over landing zone
  2. Reduce altitude slowly
  3. Hover at 2-3 feet, check for obstacles
  4. Descend to ground
  5. Reduce throttle to zero, disarm

Never “drop” the aircraft - maintain control through landing.

Post-Flight

After every flight:

  • Disarm motors immediately
  • Power off aircraft, then controller
  • Remove battery and inspect for damage
  • Record flight in log
  • Allow batteries to cool before recharging
